Music, Dance and Art

Listed below are only a few of the many classes available, as it is hard to keep track of all the talented locals who offer private lessons on all three arts. If you're looking for private instruction, look for advertisements in the newspapers and bulletin boards around the valley, or post some yourself.

Rather Be Creative
Every Wednesday beginning June 7 art classes will be held. The scheduled times are 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. for children and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. for adults. There is a $15.00 drop-in fee or you can purchase a punch card for ten classes for $100.00. Activities include projects that will be completed within a two-hour period. These projects are also easy to do at home. Classes will spend some time outdoors, so be prepared. For more information, call 970-641-4626 or visit their web site.

Creative Arts Institute (Center for the Arts, Crested Butte)
This is a three- and four-week camp that offers daily classes in creative writing, creative movement, graphic arts, music, and drama to both children and teens. The 23rd year of this program runs Monday, June 26 through Friday, July 14. The theater portion of this program, offered to ages 11 to 18, begins Thursday, June 22 and ends with the production of Oliver on Saturday, July 22. Dansummer
This wonderful dance workshop teaches daily classes in jazz and tap to children and teens ages 8 and older. Beginning Monday, July 17, this program runs for three weeks and ends with a performance at the Center for the Arts on Saturday August 5. For more information on the 22nd year of this event (that's a lot of tap shoes!) call Bobbie Reinhardt at 970-349-5686.

Summer Arts Institute (Gunnison Arts Center)
This two-week program designed for children and teens ages 2 through high school includes kid-friendly theater productions, art classes, and kid's dance. These classes usually take place in the last two weeks of July and are free with pre-registration. Call the Gunnison Arts Center at 970-641-4029 for more info.

Munchkin Music
These fun movement and music classes are for kids ages birth through 4 years old and their parents or caregivers. Activities focus on adult/child interaction rather than child/child interaction. A child's musical development is greatly enhanced by early exposure. Children participate as they choose and do so at their own development level. Learning comes through play!
Summer classes will run from the week of July 10 through the week of August 14 (six-week session.) The schedule is Mondays and Tuesdays 9:30 or 10:30 a.m. in Crested Butte, Wednesdays 9:30 or 10:30 a.m. in Gunnison. Drop-ins are welcome at $10.00 per class.
