Gunnison and Crested Butte Colorado Family Activity Guide -- Summer 2006
Star Gazing

One of the unique features of Gunnison County is the clarity of the stars at night. If you are in town, it's a short drive or a short walk out of town to get away from town lights. Full Moon nights are great for taking a walk - without a flashlight.

The best place to view the night sky is from your own backyard. Grab blankets, lawn chairs, turn out all the lights, and bundle the family up for the cool night air. Various planets, stars, falling stars (meteors) and satellites can be seen with the naked eye. Try to spot a satellite. They're bigger than stars, round, slightly silver in color, and they move fast. Summer constellations include the Big Dipper and Cassiopeia.

The Black Canyon of the Gunnison and the Curecanti National Recreation Area offer guided tours of the night skies throughout the summer (and winter.) The Elk Creek and South Rim Visitors Centers have information for the dates and times of these programs. NASA Sky Watch Program is available to help you find out what is currently visible in the night sky. The Elk Creek Visitors Center can be reached at (970) 641-2337.
