Linda Powers was first an elementary school teacher in New York. After moving her family to Crested Butte, she found that teaching jobs were rare if not unavailable. Having two young children in 1977, Linda noticed that there was not much that

catered to kids in Crested Butte. That sparked her idea to open Pooh's Corner, a children's specialty store.

At that time, Pooh's Corner featured toys from fifteen cents to expensive imported stuffed animals. "So that children could come in, browse, and be in a position to buy an item out of their allowance," said Linda.

Celebrating its thirty-year anniversary this November, Pooh's Corner has the same kid friendly ambiance and is filled with toys that spark intellectual curiosity and foster the special spirit within each child. The majority of toys come from small companies that do not advertise nationally. These companies try very hard to be unique, as Pooh's hopes to be.

"It saddens me," Linda reflects, "to see what has happened to the toy industry in the United States and the world. So much is controlled by giant toy corporations who make their products in China and use children's television to sell too many inappropriate items to our kids."

Pooh's Corner is unique, thriving in a unique community. Linda features specialty children's items in a store that itself nurtures children. She has always been about nurturing children, first as a school teacher, then as a mother, a grandmother, and as the owner of Pooh's Corner.
