Whether it’s a downpour outside or you just need a little break from
all that beautiful sunshine, these activities are definitely worth
stepping in for.
Story Time
Sit back, relax, and even read a magazine while the kids enjoy a great story read by our local librarians. Just try to make sure to go at age appropriate times.
The Gunnison Library at 307 N. Wisconsin offers a Baby Book Club on Tuesdays from 10-10:30, for ages 0-3, and Wednesdays from 11:30 to 12 for preschoolers. Also offered is the Summer Reading Program at 9 a.m. for K-5, running June 4- July 30 (registration is the week of may 27). There will be a balloon show on the first day of Summer Reading and an interactive circus with the Scarlet Sisters on the last day. You can also bring the whole family over for a pajama party on the first Tuesdays of the month at 6pm. For more information and to confirm events, please call (970) 641-3485.
The Old Rock Community Library in Crested Butte at 507 Maroon Ave offers story times for toddlers and preschoolers as well as the Summer Reading Program on Fridays from 9-10am. Registration begins May 30. For more information on times etc call (970) 349-6535. The library is open Mon, Wed, Fri from 10-6, Tues and Thurs 10-7, and Saturday 10-2.
Both libraries offer fun games on the computers for kids, cozy reading areas, and movie and CD rentals.
Crested Butte Heritage Museum
Located at Fourth and Elk Ave. in Crested Butte, this museum has a replica of the 1920s train that ran around the valley, the Denver Grand Rio. There are also ranching, cowboy, mining, and old ski equipment displays, as well as a great gift shop with toys and souvenirs. Tours are given for groups of 10 or more and admission for children is $3.00. Call (970) 349-1880 for further information.
Majestic Theatre
Located in Crested Butte next to Clark’s Market, this is the only movie theatre in the valley. They offer new movies for children and adults, as well as the occasional showing of older classics. For movie times call (970) 349-8955 or visit their website at www.cbmajestic.net.
Gunnison Recreation Center
A climbing wall, game room, foosball, video games, open gym times, and more are available here. Birthday packages are also available. Little ones can roll around on the gymnastic mats and the older ones can shoot hoops. It’s a great place for some family fun. The recreation center is located at 200 E. Spencer (behind True Value). Western State College Games Area
Located in the basement of the College Union Building, there are pool tables, a bowling alley, table tennis, a foosball table and video games. Contact Jamie or Shelley about reserving a space for birthday parties. Call (970) 943-2066 for further information.
Specialty Stores
Nomadic Spirits in Crested Butte offers an awe-inspiring crystal rock and mineral collection with a special and very affordable “kids rock section”, as well as a variety of beads. The Doll House Collection in Gunnison has handcrafted dollhouse miniatures that are available for viewing and for sale. The owner loves to introduce children to this art form and no purchase is necessary. Call (970) 641-0171 to set up a viewing time or drop by 208 S. Wisconsin and ask for Maureen O’Donnell. Pema Dawa offers an array of beautiful beads and stones plus all the supplies for making jewelry, as well as many other fun items! You can also design your own necklace etc and they will make it for you! They are located in the company store on third and Elk.
