The Adaptive Sports Center
The Adaptive Sports Center in Crested Butte has promoted much outdoor fun for adults and children of all ages for twenty years. Government mandated changes started about 25 years ago requiring accessible public facilities for handicapped with the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and in 2008 we find adapted ski equipment, adapted bicycles, accessible fishing decks, adapted ropes for rock climbing and much more.
What progress!
The following quotes from some ASC participants and families sums up the experience:
“Eric has said this was the best vacation ever and you guys are the reason why. For me and Keith, too. We can relax a bit knowing you are all there to help and we can finally bond as a family without judgments. It means so much to us – You have no idea.” — Kathy R, parent
“As parents, we found a little more confidence. What we remember most about our time with ASC is how happy our kids were and how relaxed we were.” — Participant, ASC’s Family Weekend Getaway 2007
“I can overcome my fears, no matter how big they are.” — ASC participant
This summer, the Adaptive Sports Center is offering activities for individuals and families that include biking (downhill mountain biking, handcycling, off-road handcycling, tandem mountain biking), boating (canoeing, open water kayaking, whitewater rafting, multi-day trips), climbing (rock climbing, ropes course), and hiking (beautiful day hikes, wildflower tours, environmental education outings).
Prices vary according to the season and rates are available on their website at www.adaptivesports.org or call Matt at

Fishing
West Tomichi Waterway is a park located at the west end of Tomichi Ave. in Gunnison. See our Park Maps section for directions. Handicapped accessible fishing is available in the park.
The Taylor River also has accessible fishing at Rosie’s Lane, which is located past Harmel’s Resort on Hwy 742 (Almont).
Toddlers and Young Children
There is a special needs program available through Stepping Stones Preschool. Call (970) 349-5228 and contact Mark for more information.
Parking Permits
A handicapped parking permit is obtained through a series of steps, beginning with your medical doctor. A form is filled out by your doctor and County Motor Vehicles issues the permit. If you are traveling to the area, bring your parking permit with you.
