Gunnison/Crested Butte Colorado Family Activity
Guide You're away from light pollution and it's time to take a visual journey into the night sky. There are several ways to observe the universe beginning with stepping outside and looking up.Bundle up the family, pull out the wool blankets, and snuggle together while you observe the sky. Take an evening snowshoe hike or cross country ski; it's particularly beautiful during a full moon. Various planets, stars, falling stars (meteors) and satellites can be seen with the naked eye. The Elk Creek Visitor's Center at Blue Mesa Reservoir has a flatscreen where visitors can view downloaded pictures from The Hubble Telescope and from the NASA Sky Watch program. Pictures of the Earth and pictures of stars can be seen. For more information, contact 970-641-2337. A very exciting project is underway in Gunnison that will be open to the public at no charge upon completion. Volunteers are building the Gunnison Valley Observatory located near Hartman Rocks. This organization's mission is to create unique opportunities in astronomy and science education. For information on the progress of the observatory, a "clear sky clock" for the Gunnison Valley and how to donate to this non-profit association visit www.coloradoskies.org. |
